We Are Founded On That Knowledge. We Are Founded On That Responsibility.
Pangaea Genomics Institute Limited is a non-profit African-global genomic intelligence organisation founded in Lusaka, Zambia, in 2025, built on the conviction that Africa’s biological future depends not on the ability to sequence DNA, but on the ability to assign meaning to it, predict from it, and act on it.
Our Founding Story
Before the continents drifted, there was Pangaea, one earth, undivided. Long before that separation, in the soils and savannas of Africa, humanity took its first breath. Africa is not the periphery of the human story. Africa is its origin. And in the genomes of her peoples, and in the cells, tissues, and morphological signatures of her bodies, lies the deepest, most ancient, and most diverse record of what it means to be human.
Pangaea Genomics was founded by a molecular cyto-oncologist and a molecular pathologist on a conviction not yet acted upon at scale in Africa: that the continent’s biological future depends not on the ability to sequence DNA, but on the ability to assign meaning to it, predict from it, and act on it. As a non-profit organisation, we are building Africa’s first Genomic Intelligence Platform on African soil, from African data, for African people, and for the public benefit of all humanity.
Our Vision
A world in which Africa’s genomic and biological diversity is fully mapped, deeply understood, and equitably translated into health solutions for African people and all of humanity, where African scientists lead global genomic and morphogenomic science from African soil, where the next generation of African researchers is trained and empowered, and where the benefits of that science flow back to the communities whose genomes and tissues made it possible.
Our Mission
Pangaea Genomics exists to unlock the scientific, clinical, and public health potential of Africa’s genomic and morphological diversity. We pursue this mandate through three interdependent commitments: rigorous genomic research that generates knowledge Africa and the world does not yet have; capacity building that trains and empowers the next generation of African biomedical scientists and entrepreneurs; and collaboration built on African-global partnerships grounded in mutual respect, shared benefit, and genomic equity. Everything we do serves the public good.
Our Founder
Makungu Peter
PhD Candidate in Biomedical Sciences (Cellular and Molecular Pathology) · University of Zambia · Founder and Chief Operations Officer
Makungu works at the intersection of cellular and molecular mechanisms of disease, with a research focus spanning spatial biology, HIV-associated metabolic disorders, Type 2 diabetes, non-communicable diseases, and translational biomedical science. He brings deep expertise in digital pathology, environmental genomics, and artificial intelligence to the Pangaea Genomics Intelligence Platform, grounding its predictive and interpretive layers in the clinical and molecular realities of African disease.
Our Declaration
We do not wait to be included in global genomics. We position ourselves at its frontier. We generate the questions, design the studies, build the platforms, train the scientists, develop the entrepreneurs, and build the intelligence systems that this moment in biological history demands. We do this from Lusaka, Zambia, and for the world.
